Ole Gunnar Solskjaer 'set to sanction sale' of Man Utd trio in January

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer is set to give the green light for Man Utd to sell out-of-favour trio Phil Jones, Sergio Romero and Marcos Rojo in January, reports the MEN .

None of the three players have played a single minute of action for United this season and are considered surplus to requirements at Old Trafford having been omitted from their 25-man Premier League squad.

Rojo spent last season out on loan at Estudiantes and United are keen to get his salary off the wage bill, similarly to Jones, who has been dogged by injuries of late.

Meanwhile Romero has slipped further down the pecking order following the return of Dean Henderson from his loan spell at Sheffield United.

United were weighing up whether to sell Romero in January or loan out Henderson again, but it looks likely the Argentine will be offloaded before his contract expires next summer.

Everton tried to land Romero in the last transfer window, but United's reluctance to budge on their demands led the Toffees to move for Robin Olsen instead.

Rojo will also be out of contract in June, as is versatile defender Timothy Fosu-Mensah, who could also depart in the upcoming window.

Jones's deal runs until 2023 but he is not part of Solskjaer's first-team plans, with Burnley currently the front-runners for his signature.

United are also set to lose Odion Ighalo, who will return to Shanghai Shenhua at the end of his loan.

Ighalo's role in United's team was essentially made redundant following the arrival of Edinson Cavani last month.

Solskjaer will be welcoming one new face into his set-up, as Amad Diallo completes his switch from Atalanta after being tracked by United for over a year.

The 18-year-old winger signed for the club for an initial £19million with a further £18.5m potentially due in add-ons, but was unable to make the move until he was granted a work permit.
