David de Gea apologised to his Manchester United team-mates in the dressing room after his howler against Barcelona.
The Red Devils goalkeeper let Lionel Messi's second goal slip through his grasp and squirm into the back of the net.
Ole Gunnar Solskjaer's side lost the game 3-0 on the night and 4-0 on aggregate as they crashed out of the Champions League at the quarter-final stage.
According to the Sun, De Gea claimed his team could have won the tie had it not been for his error.
The former Atletico Madrid keeper could do nothing about Messi's first goal or Coutinho's brilliant strike for the third at the Nou Camp.
De Gea continues to be linked with a move to Real Madrid and can leave Old Trafford for free next summer when his contract expires.
Manchester United goalkeeping coach Emilio Alvarez revealed he had worked with De Gea over a special plan for Messi.
Alvarez told Cadena Ser radio: 'We do some things different.
'I wouldn't lie if I said we do a super special preparation. I already worked in La Liga for many seasons with David [De Gea] as well and before with other keepers.
'I can't deny that there is a particularity regarding Leo [Messi] in which in the end, you try to offer tools and data to the keeper so that it can help him.
'But we all know that no matter how much you study Leo, or if you have the tools and those are good, talent is always above anything else.
'I do work that is more specific with De Gea which I obviously can't reveal, but we do some things different and we include other things than with respect to another game as we are facing Leo.'
