Rio Ferdinand explains what Edinson Cavani's arrival means for Mason Greenwood

Rio Ferdinand is backing Edinson Cavani’s arrival to take Mason Greenwood to the next level at Manchester United.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer spent much of the summer window trying to add more attacking firepower to his squad.

He failed in bids for Jadon Sancho and Ousmane Dembele, but did manage to land former PSG striker Cavani on a free transfer.

The 33-year-old agreed to a one-year deal at Old Trafford, before being announced as a United player on deadline day.

Cavani joins Anthony Martial, Marcus Rashford and Mason Greenwood in the battle to lead United’s line in the upcoming season.

Former United striker Romelu Lukaku hinted he was against the signing, believing he could harm the progress of Martial and Greenwood.

"If you buy another striker, what are you going to do with Anthony?" Lukaku told The Times .

"Then you have Mason's transition that is going to happen any time soon from right-wing to No 9, and Mason is a killer. I've seen him first hand. He's got something."

However, Red Devils legend Ferdinand believes the presence of Cavani could set an example for 18-year-old Greenwood to follow.

Greenwood netted 17 times in his breakthrough season and will now be able to learn off the 33-year-old, who has spent a decade at the top of the game.

Asked on Instagram, what Cavani will offer to United, Ferdinand said: “I think the way he plays, the way he looks after himself, the way he trains. His experience, what he can teach the lads, especially Mason Greenwood.

“Seeing a top technician, a top striker who’s been there, consistently through many years. 200 goal for PSG, he’s won multiple trophies at the top end of the game.

“For someone like Greenwood, to see and watch someone like that on a daily basis; how he prepares, how he recovers, how he trains, the intensity levels he trains with through the week.

“Just to hone himself and hone his own training programme that he’s got for himself, Mason will be the one to benefit most.”
